The Via Garibaldi really was, until the first decade of the XX century, a fourth part as long as today. In fact it ran between the present jevellery store and the Bar Auriga, passing under the arches of the Xodo Bar. Westward the Way threaded under the arches of the Medieval Quarter (where at present is the Bakery "In sciņ canto") with the name of carroggio drito (straight narrow way). Eastward it penetrated in a long and tightened Way, called carroggio soprano (upper narrow way) that, with a pair of interruptions, continued to the end of the "Walk". With the purpose to upgrade the Port and to give the indispensable connection by wagons to the railway station it was necessary the raze of the first line of the houses, already old and unwholesome because too much exposed to the fury of the waves. The photo immortalized that moment. One tells that the owners of the back houses, from whose windows the sun never hadn't entered, complained themselves of having to face the expense for the purchase of the shutters! They were cheer up only thinking to the saving of candles or of the expensive electricity that, at least during the day, would no more have been necessary to use. The sight of the sea of which unexpectedly would have enjoyed those apartments, at this time did not have any value.
Today it doubles their price. |
