The George's Creek's source lies into the stratums of the Mount Esuli, env. four miles far from the sea in the Locality called Saint James (San Giacomo) on the hill above Camogli. It flows under the arches of the Roman Way Aurelia and comes down towards Camogli, splitting the city in two sides. Towards the end of the year 1700 its bed, running between the houses, has been covered by stairs, also building a new climbing street called Salita Priaro putting in communication between them the houses already constructed on its sides. Its development becomes then plain, passing under the bakery "In sciņ canto" and going straight away towards the sea grazing between the houses. Until the first years of the XIX century it leaded into the sea in the corner between the Way Garibaldi and the Public square Columbus, where at present begins the beach. For practical and hygienic reasons it were decided to cover it with a wharf towards the open sea, and this wharf was called "Rivo Giorgio" (George's Creek). The picture shows the preparation of the feast for its inauguration. The several city administrations, with a work program lasting decades, have made in such a way that nothing else than rainy water can be poured into the river. The program is finished with the construction, approximately twenty years ago, of one of the first great cleaning and water purification plant of the whole Ligurian Coast, completely hidden under the beach for aesthetic reasons. |
