Festivity of the "Stella Maris" (Star of the Seas)

Year: 1930 approximately

Photography: Ferrari’s Archive

NOTES:

The festivity of the Stella Maris is a procession of boats carried out during the first Sunday of August of every year, starting from the port of Camogli until to the altar of the Madonna of the Seas to Punta Chiappa.

Celebrated today as from centuries (one of its high-medieval images were found in the romanic Church of Saint Nicolò in Punta Chiappa) the procession begins with the bucintoro (so is called the boat that leads the procession, where the Civil and Ecclesiastical Authorities of Camogli take place) and, caught up the Punta Chiappa cape, the Archpriest celebrates the High Mass, blessing the sea, the boats and the fishermen, invoking the special protection of the Madonna of the Sea for another year.

The boats are dressed with festivity flags and, as we see in the photo, a small steamship (to notice the funnel and the wind sleeves) in this year participated at the procession.

At the evening in memory of the many camogliese died in the sea, twenty thousand floating candles are set down in the dark sea, forming a great spot of light that, dragged from the current, slowly disappears to the horizon.
