ARCHIVE ANCIENT CAMOGLI

039.           THE "ISLAND"

Year:  1950

Photographer: B. Ferraris

NOTES:

Until to the years 1950 - 1955 this was the city quarter with the oldest and decrepit houses of the whole Camogli: three sides exposed to the open sea to the burning sun and opened to the winds of all the quadrants.

Few people wanted to live in this quarter and they did it reluctantly.

At the beginning of the second half of the Fifties a silent revolution happened: the "second houses" age (tourist-owning apartments) unexpectedly arrived.

The more shrewed and sophisticated tourists realized that those that for the most were defects, soon would become as qualities to pay at high price: the direct exposure in front of the sea from all sides and the whole day to the sun, the sea under the windows, absolutely quiet for the absence of car roads and the one-shot scene of a small port unequalled in the world.

Slowly, room by room, the old houses of the Island were bought, then restructured onside and outside lefting unchanged this ancient and uncheangeable hors d'oeuvre of spontaneous architecture that today we can admire.

Now the inner ones are all precious jewels, one different from the other, realized by the most famous architects and provided with the most modern comforts.

No better panoramic sea view is enjoyable than by its windows and one only from there so deeply enjoys and feels intensely its breath.

Useless to say that today the apartments of the Island quarter are only a privilege of few lucky people.
