ARCHIVE ANCIENT CAMOGLI

041.       The PORT of CAMOGLI

Year:  1950

Photographer: unknown

NOTES:

In the center of the picture there is one of the first boats constructed purposely for the transport of the tourists towards Punta Chiappa and San Fruttuoso: the previous ones were large fishing boats adapted for the new use.

The growing request of tourism demanded greater comfort and speed.

To notice the "newest" shelter of the embarking pier, now replaced by a brand new one in wood and copper with seagull wing roof shape.

Behind the shelter we notice the "Turkish boat", a  strange and fat two-masted sail ship with a high board and a deep dark hold (at least at we children so seemed  it climbing and scrambling aboard to play "at the pirates").

On the stern it had written in large letters: Yildiran - Istanbul.

We didn't what "Yildiran" could signify, but it excited our phantasy visualizing adventures, battles, boardings, grapplings and storms.

Captured because of cigarettes smuggling, she remained more than one and half year in the Port; then, after some reparations dued to the received shootings, she leaved the port forever.

Some time later the people said that this boat sunk loosing hands and goods in a storm off the sicilian coasts.
