Single spot of color in the painting is the blue flag of the Reign of Sardinia that interrupts the rigorous tawny uniformity. Perhaps other colors had in origin the figure of the Virgin, of which today unfortunately nearly only the design remain if the blue touch of the veil is excluded. |
