"Horrible Hurricane suffered by the
named Ship Guido; on the 20th day of December 1871 in the vicinities of
the Scilly Islands in England.
Unexpected a breath of much frightful wind impossible to describe wrecked the jibboom even breaking the chains of the saying, and take away the opened sails, except that one of main lower topsail, and the growing waves, completely covering the ship, pulled off the the battery planking. Desolation seized all the crew that no other aid hoped than in Holy Mary of Boschetto, which did not abandon them; and leaving off the hurricane, Capt.n Prospero Schiappacasse donates the present offer in homage for the received grace." |
Notes:
In this, as in nearly all the paintings
accredited to Canetta, there are the particularly emphasized grammar
errors in the text: it is an evident effort to italianize the genoese
language (cfr. the table # 24).
The incredible force of the wind is rendered with the ravel of the sails reduced in thousands frays, resumed the author's image in many of his works for its visual effectiveness; it is even indicated, although the reduced dimensions, with the sailor's hair way. |
